Helping You Move Better is in Our DNA

Welcome to Unwinding Studio

Hi, I’m Sonja, and my ultimate goal is to help you move out of pain and into a place where your body functions optimally. Over the years, I’ve learned that addressing pain effectively requires a two-part approach. Pain is rarely isolated, and the process of relief involves working with both the right muscles and the entire body system. Here’s why it’s not as straightforward as it may seem.

It's More Than Just Isolated Exercises
Many people think that if they feel pain in a specific area, they should only work on that particular spot. While this can be helpful in some cases, the reality is that pain often stems from other parts of the body. For example, shoulder pain might not necessarily mean there’s a problem with the shoulder itself—it could be a result of an imbalance in your rib cage or even something further down the line, like your hips.

In an ideal world, our fascia and connective tissues would be free of restrictions. However, due to various factors like repetitive movements or injuries, these tissues become tight, leading to discomfort or pain. That’s why it’s essential to look at the entire body and its alignment rather than just one area.

The Role of Fascia and Muscle Strength
When you strengthen muscles, it’s important to ensure that you're engaging the right ones and in the right way. Too often, people focus solely on linear exercises—movements that go in one direction. While these are a great foundation, they can sometimes lead to imbalances because they strengthen the muscles in just one plane of motion. If your body is always pulling in the same direction, it won't be supported effectively for everyday activities that require more dynamic movement.

The body needs a balance of stabilization and mobility. For example, one area of your body should remain stable while another moves. This balance is crucial in preventing unnecessary strain and injuries, which is why it’s the first thing I like to address when working with my clients.

Exploring Fascia Release Techniques
In addition to strengthening, another important aspect of pain relief is addressing fascia adhesions and tension. The fascia is a web of connective tissue that wraps around muscles, bones, and organs, and when it's tight, it can contribute to pain. Using tools like a ball or a towel to apply gentle pressure can help release these adhesions and alleviate discomfort. This process, known as fascia release, allows us to target the connective tissues, getting closer to the root of the problem without aggravating the nerves or muscles directly.

The goal isn’t to simply release tension where the pain is located, but to understand how the muscles and connective tissues are interacting. Knee pain, for instance, could be a result of hip misalignment or improper glute activation. By looking at the bigger picture, we can address the source of the issue rather than just the symptom.

Pilates Movement: A Foundation for Pain-Free Living
Pilates movement serves as a great foundation for people looking to improve their overall body function and reduce pain. The linear movements in natural Pilates help the body learn where stability and mobility need to occur, providing a better understanding of how your body functions as a whole. Pilates also incorporates resistance, which is excellent for building strength in a controlled manner.

For those who are unstable or weak, Pilates machines like the tower or the Cadillac can provide a safe and supported environment for movement. The resistance of these machines helps people work through a full range of motion without putting too much strain on any one area. Over time, this leads to improved alignment and greater overall stability.

Strengthening With Resistance
As clients progress, they may need to incorporate more challenging resistance exercises, especially for those with stronger muscles that tend to dominate during movements. In these cases, consistent resistance from cables can be particularly helpful. This allows the smaller, deeper muscles to activate, which are often overshadowed by the larger muscles.

Gravity and free weights are beneficial, but they have limitations in how many muscles they can engage at one time. That’s why I often turn to machines for specific movements, as they allow for a more focused and targeted approach. It’s all about peeling back the layers and discovering what your body needs to improve its overall function.

A Personalized Approach
No two bodies are alike, and that’s why a one-size-fits-all solution rarely works. Pain is often a result of a combination of factors, including how you live, the muscles you use most often, and even your daily stress levels. I work with each client to figure out their unique needs and create a personalized plan to help them move forward.

Seeing someone at their worst—when they’re in pain—provides an opportunity to explore different strategies and discover what’s going on beneath the surface. It’s not just about physical therapy, yoga, or strengthening; it’s about overseeing the whole process to ensure that you’re addressing all the right areas for your body.

If you have any questions or want to learn more about how this approach could help you, feel free to reach out. I look forward to helping your body feel less pain and move better!

Helping You Move Better is in Our DNA

Sonja James Studio Movement is something we all take for granted, until we wake up one day and realize it doesn't come as easy as it once did. Maybe your story is similar to mine. I grew up dancing, focusing on tap and jazz. This continued into my 20s where I soon discovered rock climbing which became my passion!

In 2004, I became a NASM Certified Personal Trainer as well as a Flexibility and Performance Coach. I routinely entered triathlons and did distance training on my never ending quest for increased flexibility. As one might think, I thought more was better. This unfortunately, was not the case. What I achieved more of, was pain and exhaustion.

Due to a back injury in college, I focused on trying to find what would relieve the pain and stiffness. I did a lot of research on muscle weakness and muscle imbalance. In 2006, I earned my ACE Aerobics Certification and began to teach dance as well as Mat Pilates. This lead to my Certification in Equipment Pilates in 2010, which I still have to this day.

The time had come where I really needed to start learning more about what was going on in the musculature of my body. Years of Pilates had left me feeling very strong and ironically, very stiff. This was not what I signed up for.

I started researching why this was happening and came across a type of therapy that brought everything full circle for me. What I discovered was that I had deep adhesions in the fascia of my muscles. These adhesions were the cause of my stiffness. This is incredibly common and most people who routinely work out, have them. This was a turning point in my physical life.

Enter, Yamuna Body Rolling, The MELT Method and Block Therapy. Using these therapies, along with  the GYROTONIC® Method, I have reached the place that I have longed for. Now, I'd like to show you that place. It's a place where muscles don't ache, bones no longer creak and my energy level is always up. Please allow me to join you on your quest to revitalization!
